Xiaozhang can be called 'slicing palm' in English. It has the feeling of slicing something with a sword. It strikes upwards or downwards, usually slightly at an angle. The original meaning usually refers to paring an apple or taking a thin slice from something, so you can think of the cut more as slicing an arm off rather than cutting the body in half.
