Terms in Chinese

The Ma Gui Ba Gua system is being taught worldwide. We need to be able to talk to each other when we play, so it is best if everyone learns the Chinese words for the basic techniques. Here is a PDF file on the pronunciation of Chinese.


Baibu stepping: turn-out step, hook-out step is the usual translation. Peel away step is probably better, especially in our style since the foot is often not actually hooked out.

Koubu stepping: turn-in step, hook-in step.

Mabu stance: horse stance. In our style, this is often also a 'horse stance feeling' or a 'half horse stance' as well as a full square horse stance.

Shuanyao: core body training method. Taught to advanced students to develop the deep tendons and connections.

Fali: putting full, fast power for the technique. In our style, this is done with whole body connected strength.


SOME OF THE MAIN TECHNIQUES OF BAGUZHANG

Bengshou: snapping hand, an upward or sideways barring arm.

Chuanzhang: threading palm, spearing palm. an action like threading an arm through a sleeve or like a bird threading through a forest.

Daishou: dragging palm.

Dian: dotting, a dropping stab, usually done with a tipped weapon.

Fanbeichui: backfist.

Gaizhang: covering palm. a feeling like putting a lid on a pot.

Gua: hook, a large catching action, not necessarily grabbing.

Gou: hook, a catching action, not necessarily grabbing.

Kaizhang: opening palm, a feeling like an eagle spreading its wings.

Lan: circular trap.

Liaozhang: slicing up palm. a lifting power with the arm inverted.

Pizhang: chopping palm. a feeling like putting an axe right through wood, usually including a swing over before chopping down.

Qiezhang:  cutting palm. a feeling like cutting a cabbage from the ground with a machete.

Tanzhang:  reaching palm. a feeling like reaching into a bag to find something.

Tan-chuan:  tanzhang and chuanzhang alternating.

Tazhang: compressing palm, collapsing palm. a feeling like dirt settling and compressing.

Tiaofa:  scoop up, always combined with a strike. Tiaoda is one of the zhuangzhang skills. There is also tiaobeng, tiaozhuang...

Tui: push, a full arm extension coming from the rear foot.

Xiaozhang: slicing palm. like taking a slice off of something, or paring.

Yazhang: pressing palm. a feeling of the body being very heavy and settling into the arm.

Yanzhou: elbow trap or strike down.

Yezhang:  inserting palm. a feeling like putting something away into an inside pocket.

Yun: brandish, 'cloud', to the side, usually defensive, but can be slashing with a blade.

Za: pound, a downwards strike or covering action.

Zhuangzhang:  shoving palm, ramming palm. a feeling like crashing a car into a wall.
