Andrea's Training Notes on Ma Gui Bagua

Liaozhang drills

Liaozhang Drills, Setting Stake

1. Horse stance feeling. Sit in an open mabu and repeat liaozhang on one side. In between, lower the liao arm and raise the blocking arm, keeping them quite straight, so that the power is balanced into the liao.

You may also hook the rear hand and pull it through to the rear

2. Horse stance feeling alternating. Sit in an open mabu and go back and forth to alternate liaozhang to each side, shifting to an open horse stance to align the liao with the outside of the front leg.

Liaozhang Drills, Moving

1. Koubu, baibu, into a mabu with liaozhang. You may sweep the arm up similar to the beginning of the second dragon change.

2. Bring the front foot in, then step forward with a liaozhang, bringing the hand past the knee. Step the other foot forward into a strike, so that it becomes a tiaoda, or a lion, depending on how you feel. The liao is a good clearing action for many techniques.

3. In the stepping drills, you may drop down is you wish, to increase the workout to the legs. Be sure not to lose the connection of the arms through the back.
