Andrea's Training Notes on Ma Gui Bagua

Ta_zhang drills

Tazhang Drills, Setting Stake

1. In a mabu feeling stance, do tazhang repeats on one side.

Also, bring the assisting arm up with a liaozhang to jiazhang. Bring the striking hand up close to the body, then extend it forward. Turn to full mabu and finish with an open jia, dropping the striking hand down slightly to tazhang.

Tazhang Drills, Moving

1. Set back on one leg, drawing the rear arm across to the opposite knee, placing the back of the hand on the thigh. Draw the lead hand back to the hip. Step forward into mabu feeling stance and do a high block and single tazhang (or bring the hand to the elbow). Keep under the extending arm so that the tazhang comes from a protected place. Tuck the striking hand up towards the jaw as it starts to move forward, so that it extends high. As it reaches almost full extension, drop it to chest height.

2. You may also turn to a full mabu with a quite extended upper block. The final position looks very much like a zhuangzhang, but the line of action is different, and the direction of the strike is downward. Normally, also, the tazhang is fingers up, and the zhuang can be sideways or up.
