Andrea's Training Notes on Ma Gui Bagua

Yazhang drills

Yazhang Drills, Setting Stake

1. In a mabu feeling stance, do repeat yazhang on the same side hand. Don’t do any setup, just repeat yazhang on one side, going up and down.

2. Reach through yazhang. In a mabu feeling stance, do yazhang repeats on the same side. Reach the non-yazhang hand forward low, then yazhang the other hand and bring the non-ya hand up, still in front, to balance the power.

You can also switch hands, alternating yazhang.

3. In a mabu feeling stance, do repeat yazhang on the same side hand. Cross the arms then do a full circle with the arms straight to yazhang to one side.

4. Back and forth yazhang. In a mabu feeling stance, cross the mrs, then reach them up and down until one does yazhang to one side and the other hooks up behind on the other side. Finish the yazhang close to shoulder height and lift the hooked hand so that the arms form an almost horizontal line. Keep sitting down and perform the whole action slowy with power. Turn the stance to face the direction of the yazhang

Yazhang Drills, Moving

1. Shifting forward yazhang. Set back, then step forward into mabu feeling stance with a yazhang.

These images are to show that the yazhang can also be done fairly high. It is not the pressing down low that makes it a pressing down power, but a setting into the body so that the arm applies a heavy power downwards.
