Andrea's Training Notes on Ma Gui Bagua

3.8 Single Hook To Four Directions

單勾四方式 dan gou si fang shi

The Four Directions Change trains the same concepts as the dragon Spinning Body Change, though again, more like a bird or snake than a dragon.

Description: Starting in single hook form with the left hand into the circle.

Action One: Koubu the right foot.

Action Two: Baibu the left foot to a T step and coil the left arm.

Action Three: Step the right foot through to lion form, a bit away from the circle, hands open.

Action Four: Baibu the left foot to an open mabu facing in. Zazhang (pound) with the left arm and keep the right arm extended behind (not hooked). Up to here it is the same as the single hook sixth and seventh changes.

Action Five: Step the right foot through to gaizhang with the right hand a bit away from the circle, to facilitate continuing in the same direction.

Action Six: Baibu the left foot to the circle line, liaozhang with the left arm. Step the right foot through to a lion strike.

Action Seven: Turn to eagle form, facing the circle centre. Roll the shoulders. Don’t do a big arm swing to get to the eagle form. The feeling is pressing down with the wings on an updraft.

Action Eight: Step the left foot to the circle line and sweep the left arm, changing to single hook form with the right hand to the circle centre.

Variation

You may continue to repeat actions liaozhang, lion strike, gaizhang, lion strike, and eagle to the four directions, travelling around the circle.
