Andrea's Training Notes on Ma Gui Bagua

4.2 Second Lion Change: Lion Rolls Over Holding the Ball

獅子抱球翻身

This change trains the lion models of qiezhang, pizhang, grabbing, and also of turning a big sabre. It makes the shoulders and arms stronger and further develops the concept of holding and rolling a big ball. The actions can be applied directly with bagua’s big sabre.

Description: Starting in lion form with the left hand in to the circle.

Action One: Koubu the right foot, keeping the arm posture.

Action Two: Baibu the left foot, doing a liaozhang with the left arm to the outside. The idea of the shape is similar to the dragon form liaozhang, but keeping the shape of a lion holding the ball.

Action Three: Koubu the right foot to the outside, tucking the head through and threading the rear hand through tight to the armpit to hold the ball in a fairly extended position. This is a chuanzhang in the lion manner.

Action Four: Turn back to face the circle centre, to simply change directions by lifting the lead hand so that it becomes the top hand. Use the power of the whole body to do this. This has the power of a tanzhang in the lion manner.

Action Five: Step the left foot baibu to continue on the circle, rolling the ball to change sides. This is repeating the first lion change, as the completion up to now has not changed sides.
