4.3 Third Lion Change: Lion Trundles the Ball

獅子滾球 shi zi gun qiu

The third lion change trains the lion model of tanzhang, zhuangzhang, daishou, and the principles of the lion form applications. The peak moves are ‘Kneading the Ball’ and ‘Throwing the Ball’.

Description: Starting in lion form with the left hand in to the centre.

Action One: Right koubu, keeping the arm shape.

Action Two: Left baibu back on the circle line. Left liaozhang in the lion manner on the circle line. This has a big feeling.

Action Three: Right step forward, slightly angled away from the circle line. Roll the lion form through with the right doing a palm up chuanzhang and the left hand going up over the top.

Action Four: Left step forward, slightly angled away from the circle line. Roll the lion form forward, with the left hand having a lion tanzhang power, pulling the right hand in a bit to balance the rolling power.

Action Five: Right step forward slightly angled away from the circle line. Roll the right hand forward with a lion form tanzhang, pulling the left hand in to keep the rolling power.

Action Six: Right koubu, turn, left baibu. Coil the left arm through along the circle line. Finish facing in to the centre with the arms fully extended, the left arm high and the right arm low. The coiling action is called Kneading the Ball, and the large opening is called Throwing the Ball. For a moment you feel as if you have thrown the ball away. You must be careful not to dissipate your spirit or really lose the feeling of the ball.

Action Seven: Right step through, right hand tucks in then extends through with a lion form chuanzhang to the outside, going under into Lion Holds the Ball. Turn to face into the circle.

Action Eight: Left foot baibu step to the circle line, opening out with a big ball, then replace the right foot onto the walking line to changes sides. This is doing the first lion change, as the change up to action seven would not otherwise change sides.
